 Skolestua Dønnes

Accommodation and Campervan Site

Skolestua on the island of Dønna, offers accommodation in a former school. Built in 1922, the old Nord-Dønna school still stands in the sunshine to welcome guests. It is a place to rest and to find a peaceful spot to rejuvenate and re-connect. Skolestua once welcomed children to overnight when their journey home was too far or too dangerous, especially in the winter. Today, Skolestua welcomes you to stay for a while to feed your soul and fill your senses in the rich cultural and natural beauty of Dønnes and Nord-Dønna.

The Story of Skolestua

Dønnes school was built by local people giving their time and skills freely through "Dugnad". The local council took over the completed school where children started to attended when the old Snekkevik school closed in 1922.

Built from wooden logs, the external walls are thick with traditional moss between the logs. This construction is hidden from sight by the cladding on the exterior.

We first visited Dønnes in 1993. we were given the opportunity to visit for one week to find out if what we wanted to do would be possible. I wanted to visit Biralee, the Interntional School in Trondheim seeking to teach. Ian was in search of suitable islands to carry out his research for the Royal Society of London. We flew from Aberdeen to Sandnessjøen, then the ferry to Dønna We met with Jens Carlsen and Skjalg Høberg who introduced us to Odmunn Skorpen and together  study sites were identified and our plans to move to Norway began.
